The Best Ever Rangers Shirts

by Mike Maxwell October 31, 2026 8 min read

Best Rangers shirt of all time

When I think of Rangers shirts.  I think of 90s. McEwan's Lager across the chest, adidas Equipment stripes down the shoulders, nine titles in a row, McCoist, Laudrup and Gascoigne.

We've sold 57 authentic Rangers shirts since 2016, and the names on the back tell the story. Ally McCoist and Paul Gascoigne are level on seven each, and Ronald de Boer is right behind them on six. Nobody runs away with it. That's quite a squad.

"It was the late eighties and it was a Rangers away strip. My grandpa bought me it and it was through him that I developed my love for football."  Scott Johnston

For this one we went back to the people we've talked to. That includes Scott Johnston of The Footy Blog, whose favourite goal ever came in a Rangers shirt, and Adam Hurrey, who got a Rangers shirt handed down from his big brother and one given to him by his grandpa. We also lean on our own Phil Delves, who reckons the first McEwan's shirt is one of the best the club ever wore.

The Best Ever Rangers Shirts, Ranked

1987/88 Home (Umbro) - The First McEwan's Shirt

Signed for Rangers FC on this day in 1987. Little did I know then it was going to be such a wonderful 11 years and winning 18 trophies.Cannot believe that was 37

Graeme Souness had arrived as player-manager in 1986 and turned Scottish football upside down. He stopped selling Rangers' best players to England and started buying England's best players instead: Butcher, Woods, Wilkins, Francis. The club needed a shirt to match, and in 1987 it got one. Our own Phil Delves wrote about it, and he didn't hold back:

"It would be the start of one of the most iconic team x sponsor combinations in world football." - Phil Delves, Football Shirt Collective
"Umbro's typical brilliance was on full display, with an all-over subliminal check pattern being the star of the show."

Look closely and the fabric is covered in that tonal check. Add the grandad collar and the red and white trim, and you've got a shirt that looks expensive even now. Phil's verdict is about as clear as it gets:

"The 1987 design, the first of the McEwan's era, is without a doubt one of the best." - Phil Delves

Late-80s Away (Umbro) - A First Shirt

Not every great shirt is great because of what happened on the pitch. Some are great because of who bought them for you. Scott Johnston told us about his first:

 - Scott Johnston, The Footy Blog

1990/92 Home (Admiral) - The Admiral Interlude

1990/92 Rangers Admiral home shirt

Admiral had a brief second spell as Rangers' kit maker at the start of the 90s, with McEwan's still on the front. Mark Hateley arrived in 1990, and the McCoist–Hateley partnership that would terrorise Scottish defences for years started here. This one doesn't get talked about enough. Plenty of fans skip straight from Umbro to adidas, but Admiral home and away shirts have sold steadily for us (five so far).

1992/94 Home (adidas Equipment) - Super Ally

1992/94 McCoist #9 Rangers Vintage adidas Equipment Home Football Shirt (L)

This is the one. It's our best-selling Rangers shirt, and seven of the ten we've sold have McCoist #9 on the back.

In 1992/93 Rangers won the treble and went ten games unbeaten in the first-ever Champions League, finishing one point short of the final. McCoist won the European Golden Boot. And on 4 November 1992, at Elland Road, he scored the goal Scott Johnston still can't get over:

"Then came my favourite ever goal... there was Ally McCoist free from his marker at the back post to score an absolutely wonderful diving header.  Super Ally was my favourite player... The goal still gives me goose pimples!" - Scott Johnston

The shirt was in other households too. Football Clichés writer Adam Hurrey told us it was one of his hand-me-downs growing up, and he wasn't exactly a Rangers fan:

"After a string of hand-me-downs from my older brother – including, unfathomably, the Rangers home shirt of 1992/93 – the first shirt I can say I truly owned was Brazil's 1994 World Cup effort." - Adam Hurrey, Football Clichés

Royal blue, three Equipment stripes across the shoulders, McEwan's Lager in the middle.

1994/95 Away (adidas) - Laudrup Arrives

1994/95 Laudrup #11 Rangers Vintage adidas Away Football Shirt

Brian Laudrup came to Ibrox in 1994 and made Scottish football look easy. He was named Scotland's player of the year in his first season. Laudrup #11 shirts from this era are still some of the most searched-for in our Rangers archive. We've sold three from the 1994/95 season, including the European version.

1995/96 Away (adidas) - Gazza Lands

1995/96 Gascoigne #8 Rangers Vintage adidas Away Football Shirt (XL)

Paul Gascoigne signed from Lazio in the summer of 1995. By April he'd scored a hat-trick against Aberdeen to clinch the title, nine-in-a-row was one season away, and Ibrox had a new favourite. This away shirt is from his first season, and it's one of the shirts our customers ask about most.

1996/97 Home (adidas) - Nine in a Row

1996/97 Gascoigne #8 Rangers Vintage adidas Home Football Shirt

The one every Rangers fan of a certain age measures the others against. In May 1997 a Brian Laudrup header at Tannadice made it nine league titles in a row, equalling Celtic's record. The shirt sticks to the same adidas formula, with a little more detail around the collar, and it was the last adidas home shirt before Nike took over. Gascoigne #8 versions are the ones collectors chase. We've sold four, and we'd love more.

1997/99 Home (Nike) - The First Nike Shirt

1997/98 Goram #1 Rangers Vintage Nike Home GK Football Shirt (M)

Nike took over in 1997, and the shirt went cleaner and plainer. That season was supposed to bring ten in a row, but it didn't, and Walter Smith's great side broke up that summer. There are still plenty of names on the back worth owning. Italian striker Marco Negri started the season scoring at a ridiculous rate, Andy Goram was still in goal, and Gascoigne's final months at the club were spent in this shirt. We've sold six shirts from this set, more than any other era bar two.

1998/99 Away (Nike) - Advocaat's Treble

1998/99 Albertz #11 Rangers Vintage Nike Away Football Shirt (XL)

Dick Advocaat arrived, spent big, and won the treble at the first attempt. Jörg Albertz, nicknamed "The Hammer" for his left foot, was the free-kick man. This away shirt is one of the cleanest Nike made for the club.

2002/03 Home (Diadora) - The Treble, by a Single Goal

2002/03 de Boer #14 Rangers Vintage Diadora Home Football Shirt

Our best-selling Rangers era: 12 sold, and Ronald de Boer #14 on half of them. Alex McLeish's side won the treble, and the league came down to the last day, settled on goal difference by a single goal. Diadora's first Rangers shirt was a bold one for a club that usually plays it safe. The European version with De Boer on the back is the one our customers buy most. We don't have one in stock right now, but we're looking.

2002/03 Away (Diadora)

2002/03 Rangers Vintage Diadora Away Football Shirt (L)

The away from the same treble season, and one of the best-value vintage Rangers shirts out there.

2003/04 Home (Diadora) - Arteta Before Arsenal

2003/04 Arteta #23 Rangers Vintage Diadora Home Football Shirt (XL)

Before Everton, before Arsenal and long before he was a Premier League manager, Mikel Arteta spent two seasons at Ibrox. It's a cult shirt now, and Arsenal fans have started buying it too.

2004/05 Home (Diadora) - Helicopter Sunday

2004/05 Rangers Vintage Diadora long sleeve away football shirt

22 May 2005. The SPL trophy was in a helicopter heading for Motherwell, where Celtic were about to win the league. Then Celtic conceded twice in the last few minutes, Nacho Novo's goal at Easter Road made the difference, and the helicopter turned around. It's one of the great final days in British football, and Novo #10 shirts from that season still sell for exactly that reason.

2007/08 Home (Umbro) - The Road to Manchester

2007/08 Rangers Vintage Umbro Home Football Shirt

Walter Smith's second spell took Rangers to the UEFA Cup final in Manchester, played in front of one of the biggest travelling supports in the competition's history. Umbro was back as kit maker, and the shirts from this run are starting to be seen as modern classics.
