When you know as much about football culture and the eccentricities that come with the game as Adam Hurrey does, any reflection on your football memories are always bound to include some classic football shirts and memories.

We caught up with Adam from the Football Cliches podcast for our My First Football Shirt series to talk about the design classic Brazil 1994 World Cup shirt, the Germany World Cup triumph and Michael Essien scoring the late equaliser for Chelsea against Arsenal.

What was your first football shirt?

After a string of hand-me-downs from my older brother – including, unfathomably, the Rangers home shirt of 1992/93 – the first shirt I can say I truly owned was Brazil’s 1994 World Cup effort. An indisputable design classic, even allowing for the giant “UMBRO” where the classier diamond logo would surely have been better.

What is your favourite football shirt?

My opinion on this changes like the wind – Holland ’88, ’93, anything with a sash – but I’m now convinced that the Germany 1990 World Cup shirt is an absolute triumph. Look at it. What part of that isn’t perfect? And their away one was brilliant too.

    What is your favourite goal?

Michael Essien, Chelsea v Arsenal, 2006. Virtually impossible to pin it down to one, but this was the first one that came to mind – a late equaliser, from a makeshift right-back, with a first-time shot he wouldn’t have been able to recreate in a million years, and a perfect camera angle for the action replay.

Thanks to Adam for speaking with us!
