Do you remember your first Manchester United shirt?

Manchester United have had some incredible jerseys over the years.  From the adidas shirts of the 80s and early 90s to the Umbro era under Sir Alex as worn by legends Beckham and Cantona.

We have interviewed hundreds of Manchester United players (Andrei Kanchelskis and Dwight Yorke), writers (Andy Mitten, Carl Anka) and fans to find out what is the top Manchester United shirt.

Here are most popular Manchester United shirts as picked in our interviews.  What's your favourite?  Let us know below.

What is the best Manchester United shirt?

1990-92 home kit. The Sharp adidas Classic United shirt

1990/92 MANCHESTER UNITED adidas Originals Football Shirt (S)

“My favourite was my first home kit at Manchester United in 1991. The Sharp sponsor and the clean adidas design were class.”

    Andrei Kanchelskis

    Who wore it:  Bryan Robson

2007-08 Manchester United home shirt by Nike

2007/09 RONALDO #7 Manchester United Vintage Nike Home Football Shirt (XXL)

The first kit I got I bought myself: the Manchester United home shirt from 2007/08. It’s red, it has a white stripe on the back, it had peak Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez nicking a Champions League victory in it. Decent.

    Carl Anka

    Who wore it:  Rooney, Ronaldo

    1980 home shirt by adidas

1980/82 ROBSON #7 Manchester United adidas Originals Home Football Shirt (S/M)

Manchester United’s red home shirt from 1980. I was seven, but loved that shirt worn by my first hero, Joe Jordan. I didn’t have the shorts or socks and I remember a cut in the collar so I think it must have been a second, but I still wore it until it was worn out.

    Andy Mitten

    Who wore it: Joe Jordan

1996-97 Manchester United blue third shirt

1996/98 CANTONA #7 Manchester United Vintage Umbro Third Football Shirt (L)

My first ever football shirt was the blue Manchester United away jersey from the 1996-97 season, with Cantona 7 on the back. He was the reason I watched football as a kid, and I supported him more than the club at the time (I was 8).

I remember thinking I was the coolest kid rocking up to the Bobby Charlton Soccer School camp near where I lived, but some older kids made fun of me because I was wearing a youth sized jersey (again, I was 8) and the printing was smaller. Weird thing to try and mock someone for looking back. That kickstarted my love affair with United's blue away jerseys, although they peaked in 02/03 and 08/09.

    Who wore it:  Cantona

    1992-93 Newton Heath third shirt

1992-94 Manchester United Newton Heath 3rd Shirt Excellent S - Football Shirt Collective

The third kit that year was also a beautiful kit (the green/gold), the kit mentioned above is also one of my favourites but the kit we won the Treble in was classy. The European home kit for 1998/99. Simple, classy with a collar and a gold shield around the badge. Which reminds me, I’m still gutted to this day about losing that kit.

    Who wore it:  Ryan Giggs

    2002 Manchester United shirt

2002/04 RONALDO #7 Manchester United Vintage Nike Home Football Shirt (M)The first kits that I can properly remember were both around the 2002/2003 season. With me being a Manchester United fan I was naturally bought their shirt and my earliest memory is having the 2002/03 home shirt with the Vodafone sponsor on, which to this day I still think is one of the nicest sponsorships I've seen on a kit.

Around a similar time I remember wearing my Dads reversible England kit which featured both the home and away shirt in one. Looking back it's a bit of a gimmick but it isn't something I would object to bringing back.

    Andy Xztals

Who wore it:  David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane

1994 home shirt with Old Trafford on it

1994/96 CANTONA #7 Manchester United Vintage Umbro Football Shirt (L)

It was the Manchester United home shirt, with the black collar and the ‘watermark’ of Old Trafford filling the shirt.  By the time I got it, for Christmas, it felt like everyone else at school had already had a football shirt for at least two years. It was probably more like two months really – I was 9 – but it was quite a moment unwrapping it.

    Sam Kelly

    Who wore it:  Eric Cantona

    1996-97 United home shirt

1996/98 Cantona #7 Manchester United Vintage Umbro Home Football Shirt (XL)I was given the full Manchester United 1996/97 home strip for my birthday as a kid. The shirt hasn’t aged very well… the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ text right in the middle at the bottom seems especially odd.  Plus, there was a button on the collar that used to dig into your skin when you controlled the ball with your chest.  Not ideal.

    Jack Lang

Who wore it:  Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs

    1999 treble winning shirt

1998/00 MANCHESTER UNITED Vintage Umbro 'CL Winners" Home Football Shirt (XL)Winning the treble with Manchester United will always be my favourite achievement in football but there was something very special about representing and captaining my country [Trinidad and Tobago], particularly at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

    Dwight Yorke

Who wore it:  Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole

    1990 United herringbone away

1990-92 Manchester United away L (Excellent) - Football Shirt Collective

Number one is the Manchester United away, the sort of herringbone 1990-92 era, the long-sleeve version of that one is a work of art.

    Michael Marden, Quickly Kevin

Who wore it:  Bryan Robson, Ryan Giggs
