We caught up with Daniel Burdett, editor of Retro United to talk 80s Manchester United adidas shirts, the white charity shield kit and celebrating Steve Bruce’s header against Sheffield Wednesday. This was all a part of our My First Football Shirt series.

What was your first football shirt?

My 1st football shirt was the Red home Manchester United Adidas shirt, which they wore from 1986-88. I got it soon after it was released in the Summer of 1986. I was 8 years old at the time and this was when I also started going to Man Utd games. In 1987, I got my 1st Season Ticket at Old Trafford which I still have to this day.

What is your favourite football shirt?

My favourite United shirt is the white Adidas shirt that the club wore in the 1983 FA Charity Shield against Liverpool and also for other games around then. The Adidas United shirts which they wore from the early 1980s until May 1992 will always be my favourite era of shirts, especially the white versions of those shirts.

    What is your favourite goal?

My favourite goal is Steve Bruce’s winning goal for Man Utd against Sheff Wed, deep into injury time in April 1993. That goal really summed up what it was like to watch Man Utd when Alex Ferguson was our manager. The celebrations after that goal were amongst the very best that I’ve experienced inside a stadium watching Man Utd over the last 30 years.
