Heralding from the City of Roses, Nike takes that image and runs with it in the 2020 Portland Thorns home shirt.
Keeping the black and red colourway, a greyscale rose pattern is added across the entire shirt. Portland’s motto, By Any Other Name – a reference from Shakespeare nonetheless – is nicely referenced in the BAON on the inner neck.
However, it is the rose motif that dominates this design and whilst it’s neither particularly bold or unsightly, in my opinion it creates more of the look of a concept shirt or training wear than a main kit.
For me, though this shirt boldly goes where few have gone before, it comes up short against its thorn-based sibling.
