We caught up with illustrator and Everton fan Jon Rogers to talk diamond patterned Everton football shirts, classy Lens kits and that Glenn Hoddle goal for Tottenham Hotpsur against Watford. This interview was done as a part of our My First Football Shirt series

What was your first football shirt?

My first football shirt was sent to me (here in Canada) by my Grandad, who grew up in the shadow of Goodison Park – a true Dixie Dean fanatic. It was the matte/silky “diamond” patterned shirt Everton wore to win the league in 1987. In fact, I’ve held onto it and my son now wears it proudly.

What is your favourite football shirt?

Ok, narrowing this down is very very difficult! Can I choose a modern one and one from the past?!

OK, so the modern kit I love is the Umbro FC Lens Away Kit for this season. Something about the diagonal black and dark grey with that little bit of orange that pops out in the logo. Classy but modern.

From the past, I think Umbro was pumping out beautiful kit designs back in the mid to late 70s. Think of Liverpool’s iconic kit, Birmingham City, Everton, Bolton, etc…but my favourite is Shrewsbury Town’s 1978 kit. Bold colours and classy – with the broad blue and honey-coloured amber stripes. Quality.

    What is your favourite goal?

I’d have to say it would be the one by Glenn Hoddle for Spurs against watford. I know it’s a famous one, by a famous guy, who scored all sorts of goals with some serious style, but that one vs Watford is special. Anyone who has ever played has dreamt off scoring a goal like that – sharp, technical superb, aware, and clinical.
