Liverpool legend Gerrard admits he hated Man United duo

Liverpool fans aren’t all that keen on Manchester United players.

And, as it turns out, neither is one of Anfield’s greatest ever midfielders.

Although Steven Gerrard says he has “nothing but respect” for Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville these days, he admits that for the years he was playing for Liverpool against the United duo, he wasn’t their biggest fan.

Gerrard, Ferdinand and Neville were all part of England’s so-called Golden Generation, and played dozens of times together for their country. But Gerrard admits he struggled to put his club allegiances behind him when he swapped Liverpool red for the white of England.

“When you’re lining up in the tunnel against Rio and Gary Neville you want to do everything in your power to beat them, there’s hatred there, that’s exactly how it is,” he said.

“When you meet up for England at that time, you pretend you like them, but your career finishes, their career finishes and your friendship starts for real.

“I’ve got nothing but respect for Rio as a player, played for a top club all his life, he’s a good fella as well, I’m enjoying the role at BT [Sport TV] with him as well.”

Knowing that their club legend loved Liverpool so much that he detested rival players is sure to to make them love Gerrard even more.

  1. The guy tried to leave Liverpool twice for Chelsea but that is always conveniently forgotten, for that reason alone he’s not the great Lfc legend he’s made out to be.
