Watch: remembering Di Canio’s bullet for West Ham v Chelsea

Paolo Di Canio scored some ridiculous goals. His volley for West Ham against Wimbledon, dribble for Sheffield Wednesday and this rocket against Chelsea.

West Ham were playing away at Chelsea.   It was the summer of 2002,  Pink was number one with Just like a pill and Di Canio was in his last season for West Ham.

West Ham unexpectedly won 3-2 thanks to this Di Canio goal.

David Lacey writing in the Guardian thought it was glorious;

Di Canio flicked the ball up on his right instep before meeting it with a glorious left-footed volley that reached the net almost before Cudicini realised what was happening.

And Sam Diss classed it as his favourite goal

As a Hammer, it’s tempting to go for Paolo against Wimbledon – he jumps so high that it’s practically a middle-finger to the realm of science, a “piss off” to wider physics – but my favourite is his screamer versus Chelsea.

Taking it on the knee about thirty-five yards out, the Italian bursts past one then another before letting rip a left-foot volley straight past whatever Blue was guarding the goal that day. It didn’t matter who it was, really: nobody was stopping that. In Paolo’s final year at West Ham, it was his greatest moment.
