The Chile striker has finally suggested that he may want to leave Arsenal this summer, admitting that he wanted to play in the Champions League in the coming season.
And it seems that the world and his wife have something to say on the will-he won’t-he saga. The latest to throw their hat in the ring is Gunners legend Paul Merson.
Merson hasn’t always been known for his common sense as a pundit.
The former England striker has often been ridiculed for making bold (to say the least) statements in his role on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday.
And Merson, who spent 12 years at Highbury, believes Arsenal should demand something better than money if Sanchez is to swap the Emirates for the Etihad.
Merson believes, if Sanchez were to go to City, Arsenal should take a striker in return. And not any striker, they should take Argentine goal machine Sergio Aguero to north London.
He said to Goal:
“I don’t think Arsenal can replace Sanchez, can they?”
“He gets 30 of their goals, but you’ve got to move on.
“If someone doesn’t want to be at the club, Arsenal are a big club and you don’t want players who don’t want to be there. Arsenal are a big club, a very big club and you don’t want that.
“He’s a good player – if I were Arsenal I’d be ringing up Man City and saying ‘Give us Aguero and you can have Sanchez.’
“[If Alexis wants to go to Man City] then I’d say I want Aguero. He’s better than Sanchez.”
The lack of Champions League football makes it pretty unlikely that Aguero, one of the Premier League’s most consistent goal-scorers over the past six seasons, would be as keen as Sanchez might be on that one…
