Condition details: Aside from finding one of these shirts still in its original bag with tags, this is as good a condition as you’ll find this shirt.

Despite its age, all the colours are bright and there are no pulls or bobbles. Even the internal labels of the shirt are in good condition, which is quite rare for an early 90s shirt.

Things to look out for: At first glance this Ajax shirt is little more than an intriguing colourway choice for the great Dutch side, but this design actually represents both a significant moment in Ajax history and also a trend which continues to resonate in the modern game.

Few sponsors in world football are as iconic from an aesthetic perspective as ABN AMRO, the long-time sponsors of Ajax whose logo would appear vertically down the front of the shirt. The 1991 season was the first year that ABN AMRO sponsored Ajax; a partnership that would extend almost 2 decades.

But that’s not all, to commemorate the new deal the very colour scheme of the 91 away shirt was chosen to match the colour of the ABN AMRO logo. The logo itself is also responsible for the fantastic, and very 90s, triangle that cuts into the front of the design. Once you see it, you won’t be able to look at this shirt the same way again.

Based on the aesthetics of the shirt we ended up with, it was a strong move. It’s also provided us with a truly great dinner party shirt story, which will impress even the biggest kit geeks you know.
