Best Newcastle United shirts of all time

There's something about Newcastle United shirts that hits different. Maybe it's the black and white stripes - one of the most recognisable kits in world football - or maybe it's the players who pulled them on. Shearer, Keegan, Ginola, Asprilla.

At Football Shirt Collective, we've sold dozens of authentic Newcastle shirts to fans around the world. Over 70% of buyers are from the UK, but Newcastle shirts ship regularly to the US, Australia, Ireland, France, and beyond. It's a global obsession, and we get it. The Shearer era alone accounts for a huge chunk of what passes through our rails. But it's not all about Big Al.

Here are the greatest Newcastle United shirts of all time, chosen by players, fans and writers as picked in our interviews.

    1995–96 Newcastle United Away Shirt

1995/96 Ginola #14 Newcastle United Vintage adidas Away Football Shirt (XL)

If you were a football-obsessed kid in the mid-nineties, this shirt got into your bloodstream. The maroon and blue, grandad-collared Adidas away kit is one of the most beloved kits the club has ever produced - and that's saying something.

"My first football shirt was the maroon and blue, grandad collared Newcastle United away kit of 1995-96. After not caring for football beforehand, I got swept up in the collective euphoria of Euro '96 and decided to follow Alan Shearer's lead after the tournament and pledge my loyalty to Newcastle United. As a nine year old, I didn't fully comprehend geography nor appreciate that Newcastle was almost 150 miles away from my home in Preston. The small town I lived in had one sports shop, which is now one half of an Italian restaurant, and that small sports shop just happened to have one Newcastle shirt - which is now one of the most iconic the club have had." - Jonny Sharples

"My favourite football shirt that I played in was the Newcastle United grandad collar shirt. Adidas made it and included the claret and blue hoops. It was great for me, because I was from London and supported West Ham. I was playing for a great club in Newcastle but wearing West Ham colours!" - Rob Lee

It's consistently one of our best-sellers. Ginola in this shirt is an image that lives rent-free in the heads of anyone who watched football in that era. Not just the most popular away kit in Newcastle's history - one of the most popular shirts we sell, full stop.

    1993 Newcastle United Away Shirt

Calcio Vintage Club 1993-95 Asics Newcastle United Away Shirt M

"The Newcastle blue and brushed sky blue away strip. Glorious in every sense of the word. Like a cloud-flecked sky on a sunny day, it complimented Barry Venison's blow-dry perfectly, and a strip that a guilty mother bought me after telling me to 'sleep off' a broken elbow." - Pete Donaldson

A shirt so good it needed its own origin story. The early nineties Newcastle kits are genuinely underappreciated - probably because the 1995–97 era casts such a long shadow - but this one deserves its place among the greats.

    1998–99 Newcastle United Home Shirt

1997-1999 Newcastle United Home Shirt XL Excellent - Football Shirt Collective

Two voices, one shirt. That tells you everything.

"My favourite Newcastle United shirt is the home shirt from 1998–1999, the final shirt we had under the sponsorship of Newcastle Brown Ale. The grandad collar may have disappeared, and thankfully so did the shield on the back of the shirt from the 1997/1998 season, but the added blue trim made it stand out. I got this shirt for my birthday, complete with SOLANO 15 on the back, with the promise from my parents that I would grow into it. Twenty years later and I'm still waiting to grow into it." - Jonny Sharples

"As a Newcastle fan, this is an iconic shirt with it being the last one with the Brown Ale shirt and was released in the year Ruud Gullit dropped Big Alan Shearer vs Sunderland and Sir Bobby Robson became a manager. Aesthetically, the shirt featured a blue trim and a big collar. The shield is ditched from the back of the shirt (which I was delighted to see) and of course, the Brown Ale sponsor finished off the shirt." - Luke Taylor

The Brown Ale era ends here. And it goes out in style. Shearer in this away version is one of the most searched shirts we stock - authentic examples in good condition don't last long.

    1982 Newcastle United Home Shirt

    1982 Newcastle United Umbro

Every collector has a shirt that started it all. For one very famous Newcastle fan, it was this one.

"My first shirt was the Newcastle United 1982 shirt made by Umbro. The shirt was thick black and white stripes with Umbro running down the sleeve with the huge blue star as the sponsor. My favourite player was Kevin Keegan, so I wanted the same shirt as him." - Alan Shearer

The symmetry is perfect. Shearer - the man who would define a generation of Newcastle shirts - wanted to wear the same shirt as Keegan, the man who preceded him. Classic Umbro. An absolute relic of early eighties football. If you find one in decent condition, you buy it.

    1996 Newcastle United Home Shirt

1996/97 GINOLA #14 Newcastle United Vintage adidas Away Football Shirt (M/L)

Some shirts are more than shirts.

"The Newcastle United 1996 shirt home (made by Adidas). It's the first time I wore [a Newcastle United shirt] after watching and supporting, so the first time I put it on." - Alan Shearer

The season after the almost-title. Shearer joining for a world-record fee. The moment when Newcastle United felt like they might genuinely challenge for everything. This shirt carries all of that weight, and the Adidas three-stripe detail keeps it looking clean decades later.

    2002–03 Newcastle United Away Shirt

An era slightly overshadowed by what came before it, but this away kit earns its place.

"My favourite Newcastle shirt is the 2002–03 away kit. A beautiful grey base with a thick navy stripe down the centre was great. Despite no Brown Ale sponsor, NTL was one I remember from being a kid and that sponsor featured on some of my favourite shirts to wear when growing up. The 02/03 kit was one I strongly remember wearing a lot when playing myself, pretending to be my favourite player (at the time), Laurent Robert." - Luke Taylor

The Bobby Robson years. Champions League nights. A period that doesn't always get the shirt love it deserves, but this grey away kit more than holds its own.

Our most popular Newcastle United shirts

Our sales data backs all of this up. Shearer accounts for more Newcastle purchases than any other player - by a significant margin. Ginola comes second, with the 1995–96 period dominating. The 1997–99 era sees Asprilla shirts flying out too. More recently, Ben Arfa shirts from the 2010–12 Puma era have a cult following among younger collectors who caught that era.

The most popular Newcastle shirt we've sold? The 1995–96 away - Ginola #14. No contest.
