The football shirt community thrives on football shirt concept designs. No matter what time of year it is, you can guarantee there is someone, somewhere creating a design that makes the kits in the professional world look pedestrian at best.

Because I can’t get enough of these sorts of designs, in the coming weeks I’m going to pick out a few of my favourite designers who I believe are top of the game when it comes to kit concepts.

First up is Argentinian designer Gustavo Psonkevich, aka @GusCamisetas.

If I had to describe Gus in one word, it would be “prolific”. He quite simply produces design after design after design, spanning a large variety of styles and ideas to the point where your timeline will be upgraded considerably as a result of following him.

If I had to describe Gus in twowords, I’d say “prolific” and “versatile”. Many concept designers understandably stick to one approach. Like a gamer who ‘mains’ with one specific character, designers often stick to a sort of rinse and repeat method. Gustavo however is able to apply the same high level of quality to everything from brand switching teams (like seeing what Argentina would look like with Nike at the moment) to completely abstract, bespoke designs (like a recent series of Cerezo Osaka concept designs which blew me away).

A personal favourite shirt of mine was a recent Flamengo concept, which was both unashamedly 90s and completely fresh at the same time. The fact that Gus is able to create evocative retro designs seemingly at the same ease as more modern, abstract looks speaks to his quality.

The release of Southampton's 2023 home shirt was more than 2 years in the making. Since the announcement of the club's return to hummel in 2021, a remake of The Saints iconic 1987-1989 home was on the cards.
