A skinny wide man in Sporting CP hoops becomes peak-Ronaldo in Manchester United red, then the most ruthless number in world football in Real Madrid white, before adding a late-career victory lap in Juventus black-and-white, Portugal red, and now Al Nassr yellow. Few careers span this many iconic templates, and it shows in how often he comes up when we ask our contributors about their favourite shirts and goals: Carl Anka, Graham Ruthven, Mikey Traynor, Andy Xztals and Sheridan Bird have all named a Ronaldo shirt or goal in FSC interviews without being asked about him directly - one goal in particular (the Porto screamer, below) came up in four separate conversations.

Sporting CP 2002/03 Home

Before Sir Alex Ferguson convinced the Manchester United board to sign him after a pre-season friendly mauling in 2003, Ronaldo was tearing up the wing for Sporting CP in this green-and-white hooped shirt. It's the shirt of a talent still being whispered about rather than shouted about - collectors chase it precisely because so few people were paying attention at the time.

Manchester United 2002/04 Home

The shirt Ronaldo actually signed for United in, before he inherited the number 7 from David Beckham a year later. Nike's early-2000s United template - plain red body, subtle collar - is one of the most collected of the era simply because it's the beginning of the story everyone now knows the ending to.

Manchester United 2004/06 Home

"Shirts like the vintage 2004 United home kit will bring back memories of a fresh faced Portuguese winger still finding his feet somewhat, but boy did he find them."

Manchester United 2007/08 Home

"The first kit I got I bought myself: the Manchester United home shirt from 2007/08. It's red, it has a white stripe on the back, it had peak Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez nicking a Champions League victory in it. Decent."

If you're picturing one Ronaldo shirt in your head right now, there's a good chance it's this one. The 2007/08 season is the one where the "is he all show" argument died for good: 42 goals, a first Ballon d'Or, and the Champions League won on penalties in Moscow. This shirt is doing a lot of heavy lifting for FSC's own Ronaldo sales, and rightly so. It's also the shirt he was wearing for the free kick against Portsmouth that same season - "his free kick he scored against Portsmouth where it couldn't have been any more perfect if he tried it," per contributor Andy Xztals, quoted in full below alongside his other favourite Ronaldo moment.

Manchester United 2008/09 - The "Porto Screamer" Shirt

One Ronaldo goal keeps coming up, completely unprompted, across separate FSC interviews with different people - which tells you everything about how much it means to United fans specifically.

Sheridan Bird named it too, in a list of all-time favourite goals that also included Roberto Carlos' 1998 free kick against Tenerife ("I don't understand it myself, so how is anyone else going to understand it?" as Carlos himself put it). The actual match was the Champions League quarter-final away at Porto's Dragão in April 2009 - a few contributors misremember it as the season before, which just shows how much of a Ronaldo highlight-reel goal blurs into the next. Collectors catalogue the shirt from that trip as the 2008/09 Champions League third/away kit - a good one to chase if the classic red home and away versions already sit in your collection.

Real Madrid 2013/14 Home

La Décima. Real Madrid's tenth Champions League, sealed in Lisbon against city rivals Atlético, with Ronaldo finishing the competition as top scorer. The all-white adidas home shirt from this season is the one most associated with peak-Madrid Ronaldo: the free-kick stance, the "SIUUU" celebration in embryo, the sheer volume of goals. Real Madrid 2017/18 Third

The bicycle kick against Juventus in Turin - a goal so good the home crowd gave him a standing ovation - happened in this navy third shirt during Madrid's third consecutive Champions League triumph. If any single moment sums up the "so good it stopped being fair" phase of his career, it's this one.

Juventus 2019/20 Home

Ronaldo's move to Juventus in 2018 was framed as a declining superstar chasing one last pay day. He answered that with back-to-back Serie A titles in his first two seasons, and a genuinely different shirt aesthetic for collectors used to United red and Madrid white - the famous black-and-white stripes, with his number 7 on the back for the first time since his United days. This 2019/20 template is the exact shirt we've sold through FSC (see sales data below).

Portugal Euro 2004 & Euro 2016 Home

Two bookends to his international career so far. Euro 2004 (worn with #17, a number he'd drop once he inherited the captaincy and the 7) is the shirt of a heartbroken 19-year-old crying on the pitch after losing a home final to Greece. Euro 2016 is the shirt of redemption - lifted as captain despite going off injured in the final itself. Both are genuinely emotional shirts for Portugal fans, not just Ronaldo collectors.

Al Nassr 2023- Home

The most divisive shirt on this list depending on who you ask, but there's no ignoring it: Ronaldo's move to Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr reset the conversation around where football's biggest stars finish their careers, and demand for the yellow-and-blue shirt has followed him there.
