    Never forget that Admiral were the first. Before they started manufacturing replica shirts en masse in the 70s, few people even had football shirts to speak of, instead wearing t-shirts or jumpers the same colour as their favourite team. For this reason, we love looking back on those legendary first shirts, and we were happy to do that with Mark Ogden.

    As part of our My First Football Shirt series, we caught up with football writer, Mark, to talk Admiral England shirts, black kappa Juventus shirts and David Platt scoring for England against Belgium

    What was your first football shirt?

    It was the Admiral England shirt from around 1980, just before the one which was worn during the 1982 World Cup. It wasn’t the best looking kit in the world, and pretty sure I knew nothing about it being bought for me, but it’s the one which started me off with a few kits post-1982.

    What is your favourite football shirt?

    The black 1991 Juventus away shirt, made by Kappa, which was sponsored by UPIM. Always love the Juventus kits, but I remember seeing a Pierluigi Casiraghi goal on Football Focus or Saint & Greavsie and thinking that the kit was even better than the goal. It started a trend for all black kits, with Manchester United wearing one in the early years of the Premier League.  Still have Juve shirt and, surprisingly, it still fits me 23 years on. Holland’s adidas kit at Italia 90 was another good one.

     

    What is your favourite football moment?

    David Platt scoring for England

    Hard to pick one, but World Cup goals always seemed to mean more as a kid, so it’s a toss-up between Bryan Robson’s 27 second goal against France in 1982 and David Platt’s goal against Belgium in 1990. I’ll say Platt’s – just …
