When Diego Maradona played for Tottenham Hotspur

The world lost a legend yesterday when Diego Maradona died at age 60.  The Argentinian great  1986 Diego Maradona played for Tottenham Hotspur in a testimonial for Ossie Ardiles against Inter Milan.  Here are 5 things we learnt from the Argentina striker’s only appearance in North London.

  • In 1986 Diego Maradona played for Spurs in Ossie Ardiles testimonial.
  • Glenn Hoddle gave him his shirt number and Ossie Ardiles and Diego conducted the greatest post march interview ever.

Chris Hughton had a baby face

The Nottingham Forest manager Chris Hughton was Spurs full back and was part of the UEFA Cup winning team in 1984.

Glenn Hoddle gave up his shirt

The future England manager gave up his #10 shirt to Maradona but still wore the shortest pair of shorts available in North London.

Maradona and Ardiles entered the pitch together

Maradona and Ardiles led the team out with Ossie’s 2 sons.  Hoddle and the rest of the boys had to wait a bit in the tunnel.  Awks.

The Spurs shirt was sick

The Spurs shirt was class.  it was the 1986 Spurs home shirt Holsten sponsor and hummel print.  Vintage.  To be fair I also love that Inter shirt with the Misura sponsor.

Ossie and Diego gave an awkward interviewscreen-shot-2015-11-05-at-15-48-11.png

A stoney faced Maradona gave a dour interview with Ossie translating where they spoke about the impending World Cup 86.  Neither were going to give anything away about how they were feeling.

Have a watch of our video and check out our marketplace for banging Spurs shirts, tees and art.
