Blackburn Rovers, managed by Kenny Dalglish took only 5 minutes to respond through blond winger Stuart Ripley who scored "a classic Ripley goal".
Gareth Southgate put Palace into the lead but a double from new signing Alan Shearer turned the game on its head.

Shearer was one of Jack Walkers summer signings from Southampton and went on to score 16 league goals in his first season with Blackburn. 

With Palace staring an opening day defeat in the face, Simon Osborn stepped up in the last minute to salvage a point.

Crystal Palace never recovered from selling Mark Bright and finished 20th. Relegated. Whilst Blackburn spearheaded by Shearer finished in the top 4.
