Shirt Story: Football shirts at the Olympics are a brilliant and often under-appreciated sub-genre. With tight restrictions on branding, countries are often forced to adapt their shirts or even release brand new designs just for the competition.

Japan’s red affair for the 2012 Olympics possesses a number of unique details. With the phoenix graphic on the front, the Japan flag in place of the JFA logo and no three stripes (as is typical of an adidas shirt), this is an unusual but delightful slice of Japanese shirt history.

Who made it?: adidas

Who wore it?: Maya Yoshida, Hiroki Sakai
