This is what Roma’s 2021 shirts could look like

The big news in the football shirt world this week was the rumoured deal between A.S. Roma and New Balance seemingly moving close to completion, according to @ASRomaPress

The cult favourite club have been searching for a replacement kit manufacturer for their famous maroon jerseys since announcing that their current deal with Nike would conclude at the end of the 2020/21 season, and it now appears that America’s number one sports brand will be replaced by one of their compatriots.

With an official announcement potentially around the corner, it was only a matter of time before social feeds began filling with rumours and leaks about what we could expect to see I Giallorossi wearing next season. We thought we would give you a bit of a taster with a look at a trio of Roma x New Balance concepts from @Saintetixx.

Let’s take a closer look at these concept Roma 2021 shirts!

The designs

Amongst the less positive reactions to this rumour has been an accusation from fans that New Balance’s shirt record so far has been uninspiring, or boring – a vibe which isn’t strictly the case across their 2020 shirts – but @Saintetixx’s concepts certainly explore so interesting design ideas.

Distancing itself from the lollipop look seen on this year’s home shirt, wolf heads from the club’s traditional crest fill the home shirt in different sizes and at different angles, standing out from the traditional maroon base. It’s a design that throws back to the Asics and Diadora shirts of the ‘90s, and allows for a classic look, with a nice hint to the club’s history on closer inspection.

The away shirt, meanwhile, keeps with Roma’s recent tradition of white, but @Saintetixx changes tact slightly with horizontal orange and maroon pinstripes. This is not a common design, and so brings an equally traditional and new look to such a famous jersey.

The features on the shirt are also finished in the Italian club’s famous maroon, which allows the ‘Qatar Airways’ sponsor to sink quite nicely into the shirt and not draw too much attention.

Finally, the third shirt of the collection combines Roma’s traditional colours on the sleeves and cuffs of the shirt with a dark green body, with the final combination working surprisingly well. Roma have dabbled with green as a third shirt colour in the past (including during the Asics era), so it’s a smart choice of a colourway that’s very much in Roma’s broad palette, though still with an element of intrigue.

What do you want to see from the Roma x New balance partnership?

The last few years of the Roma x Nike agreement has seen some modern classic shirts produced, as classical themes were combined with modern designs. This means that whoever came in to replace Nike would be left with an undoubtedly difficult task, and it looks like New Balance will be the brand taking on that challenge.

But if their releases for the likes of Lille and Porto this season are anything to go by, then Roma should be in good hands. And if they pay attention to the concept designs from the likes of @Saintetixx then the Giallorossi loyals need not worry. But what would you like to see from this coming partnership? Who is @Saintetixx?

Clément Thiery is a concept designer from France, and has a steady output of almost a new concept design everyday. However, the quantity does not decrease the quality, with his designs for teams across Europe’s top leagues all keeping a simple design that allows for some of the classic elements of these team’s shirts to stand out, as with this Roma concept.
