Wonderful Meyba x FC Twente concept kits are a nostalgic dream

Who saw this coming? Football kit lovers the world over got a much needed boost recently, as the cult sportswear designers Meyba announced that they were returning to top flight football. The Barcelona-based company – who fittingly kitted out Barcelona’s legendary ‘Dream Team’ of the 1990s – have signed a deal with the Eredivisie’s FC Twente.

This will be their first official output since they re-emerged in early 2019 with a replica collection of those famous Barcelona shirts, and so anticipation about what we can expect from Meyba is being hotly discussed.

One of those taking a look at what we could see next season has been FD7, who wasted no time in designing and releasing a home, away and third-kit concept of the upcoming FC Twente x Meyba collaboration. Let’s see what he came up with!

The design

Taking inspiration from the colour schemes of the FC Twente’s current kits, this concept uses red and white in both it’s home and away designs, swapping the dominant colour between  each shirt. The third kit, meanwhile, is all-black with dark silver highlights that combine really well, similar to the colour schemes of the New Zealand All-blacks’ jerseys.

Following a recent trend of images being imposed onto jerseys, FD7 has used an image of the FC Twente crowd on this third kit as well. It is not so obvious that it takes anything away from the simplicity of the all-black look, and allows the third kit to do what it is meant to: stand-out from the rest.

In terms of features on the three concepts, they all have classic Meyba elements, reminiscent of those Barcelona kits of the 1980s and 1990s. Firstly, the patterns running down the shoulders and shorts was a constant element in Meyba’s designs, often used similarly to the hummel chevron pattern.

Then, of course, there is the classic collar. The large collar combined with a V-neck is yet another throwback to Meyba’s old designs, but as with the shoulder patterning, it is still able to work on a modern design in this concept. We even saw this look return in the 2019-20 Barcelona third kit

What brands do you want to see make a comeback?

After hummel announced their return to the Premier League with Everton just last week, football shirt fans are being spoilt at the moment for classic brands coming back into the big leagues. While giants like Nike, adidas and Puma will continue to control output for the majority of larger teams, seeing smaller, newer and classic brands come onto the scene can mean more break-out new designs, or in the case of Meyba, a rethinking of classic looks for the modern day, much like FD7’s design.

We can’t wait to see what Meyba and FC Twente produce for next season, but are there any other classic brands you would like to see make a comeback? Let us know in the comments!

@FD7_CONCEPTS is a page run by designer, Florian D., and he has created some great recent concepts for Roma, Juventus and Bayern Munich. As with this FC Twente piece, he also makes up a design for training jackets based on his concept, which is a nice touch to the whole output. Check out more of his work on Twitter.
