The almost perfect hattrick Ian Wright scored v Southampton wearing the 1993 Arsenal away shirt

We asked Instagram who the 1993 Arsenal shirt reminded them of and the results were unanimous, Ian Wright. Granted there was the odd shout for Steve Bould but largely Ian Wright.

The 1993 Arsenal away shirt was made by Adidas and was their main template for that season with Liverpool sporting a similar design.

It had a yellow base and 3 blue stripes across it and Ian Wright scored a shed load of goals wearing it. 3 of the best being this banging (almost perfect) hattrick against Southampton on 14 March 1994.

The England striker’s first goal was a stopping diving header after some build up from Kevin Campbell and Ray Parlour. A goal which could only be dreamt of playing headers and volleys.

His second (the pick of the bunch) was a glorious right foot volley from an Anders Limpar chipped assist. Before the ball touched the floor, thwack (to quote Mundial) it was in the back of the neck. You could tell Wright was in the mood that day from his celebration. There was no running, just standing still with arms in the air.

When Anders Limpar was bundled over in the box by Ken Monkou, Ian Wright had the chance to score the perfect hat-trick, with his left foot, from the penalty spot. A chance he didn’t take as he buried his penalty it into the bottom corner beyond Dave Beasant with his right.

Arsenal went on to win the game 4-0.

Class shirt. Class striker. Class hattrick.
