Manchester City manager and Barcelona legend Pep Guardiola always lauded Johan Cruyff.
Cruyff, who was on of the greatest players to have walked the earth, was also one of the finest managers too.
As a coach, he raised Ajax from obscurity, creating an entirely new way to play (totaalvoetbal), before taking his talents back to Barca, where he’d played so impressively between 1973 and 1978.
Between 1988 and 1996, Cruyff won four consecutive titles with Barca, the Copa del Rey and, of course, the European Cup in 1992.
As Guardiola, who played under the Dutch master, put it: “Cruyff painted the chapel, and Barcelona coaches since merely restore and improve it.”
And, for Cruyff, he relished the talent he had at his disposal. Michael Laudrup, Ronald Koeman, Romario, Guardiola and Hristo Stoichkov.
The kit that brilliant side wore was also fitting. The classic maroon and blue stripes with white numbering and the gloriously vintage Kappa strip on the top of the sleeves makes it a classic.
