Tottenham legend Gary Mabbut’s story about a rat eating his foot will keep you up at night

Not all Tottenham fans are having a great start to the season. In fact, Spurs legend Gary Mabbutt came out with one of the most peculiar and, frankly, horrifying stories you’ll hear today.

The former England defender was forced to fly back from his holiday in South Africa for surgery after a rat ate part of his foot while he was asleep. Yes, you read that right. A rat ate part of Gary Mabbutt’s foot.

The 57-year-old has Type 1 diabetes, and has limited feeling in his feet, meaning the rat was able to chew down to the bone of his foot without him waking up.

Mabbutt was re-telling his horrendous ordeal on BBC Radio 5Live.

“All the opponents that I’ve played against and I finally get taken out by a rat,” Mabbutt said.

It happened last month when he was visiting his daughter, who works at the Kruger National Park on the border of South Africa and Mozambique.

“I’ve gone to sleep and during the night a rat has come into the bedroom, climbed into the bed and has decided to chew on my foot,” he added.

“It’s made quite a big hole in my toe, going down to the bone, and ate underneath my foot.

“It bit my daughter’s thumb first in the other bedroom, and then she came into me and said ‘Dad, something’s bitten me’. Being in Africa, you think of snakes and scorpions.”

Some time later, Mabbutt felt a bite on his thumb and looked down to see his foot covered in blood.

“Unfortunately the rat had had a nice meal and I hadn’t been able to feel it,” he said.

The Spurs icon’s diabetes means he has to test his blood 10 times each day, injecting insulin seven times daily.

Mabbutt says he still needs daily hospital treatment for his injuries sustained in South Africa, and we’re wishing him a speedy recovery from what must have been an atrocious experience.
