Remember when Aston Villa created finest best piece of content any football club has ever produced?

You know, the time they asked the likes of Gareth Southgate and Tommy Johnson what their favourite drinks were?

Basically, Aston Villa invented The Office before David Brent was but a twinkle in Ricky Gervais’s eye. Just feast your eyes on this and tell me Gervais didn’t entirely base his greatest comedy creation on Andy Townsend:

How are modern clubs, with their influencers and self-aware superstars and social media “gurus”, supposed to keep up with something so pure, so simple, as Southgate unenthusiastically talking about his love of “water and things like that”? The answer: they bloody can’t.

And the Villa team that year weren’t actually too bad either.

In the 1995-96 season, they finished fourth in the Premiership, won the League Cup and reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup under Brian Little.

Dwight Yorke, aside from loving blackcurrant and lemonade, was their top-scorer and the late, great Ugo Ehiogu was the lynchpin in defence.
