Chelsea and Barcelona face off again on Tuesday evening for what promises to be an absolute thriller.
The two clubs have recent history in the Champions League, much of it controversial.
There’s plenty of stats bouncing around about both teams ahead of the tie, but one of the most remarkable is that Lionel Messi, Barcelona’s all-time top scorer and all-round football GOAT, has never scored against Chelsea.
But back in 2012, when Chelsea beat Barcelona on their run to winning the Champions League under Roberto Di Matteo, Didier Drogba says that Messi’s statistics were so astounding that all the Blues players could do was laugh.
Here’s what Drogba said:
“Robbie Di Matteo did what he always did and put up a list of the opposing team’s top scorers. Usually, the list would read something along the lines of Rooney – 22 goals; Van Persie – 15 and so on.
“When the Barcelona list went up, sure enough, in third place was Xavi on 14, in equal second place were Alexis Sánchez and Cesc Fàbregas on 15, but we all just laughed when the top scorer came up on the screen – Lionel Messi on … 63 goals, 14 in the Champions League alone!
“But 63 that season? It was such a ridiculous figure that we looked at each other in disbelief and laughed – what else could we do? I even took a picture of the number because it was so outrageous.”
Chelsea will be hoping that Messi won’t be on song again tonight, but he’s shattered pretty much every other record laid before him, so watch this space…
