Roy Keane has stuck the boot in to ’embarrassing’ Liverpool and Tottenham

Manchester United legend Roy Keane has never been a popular figure at Liverpool, but now he’s having a pop at Tottenham too.

The former United captain has said that the two League Cups Spurs and Liverpool have won between them since 2008 is an “embarrassing” haul.

Keane had a trophy-rich career at United, winning seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the Champions League in 1999.

Never one to mince his words, he’s now taken aim at Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino’s sides.

Both Tottenham and Liverpool performed well in the Champions League this week, with Spurs snatching a 2-2 draw at Juventus and Liverpool thumping Porto 5-0 at the Estadio do Dragao.

But Keane thinks they should have more to show for their good but at times inconsistent football over the past decade.

“For a club the size of Liverpool and Tottenham, one trophy in 10 years is pretty embarrassing,” he said on Wednesday night.

“I know the Champions League has taken over now, particularly with the money behind it, but to be successful to be a big club you need to win trophies.”

Keane added: “The clubs you’re talking about, Liverpool and Spurs, should be able to compete in the Champions League and certainly qualify, and win an FA Cup or a League Cup.

“(Of) course you should be able to win an FA Cup or a League Cup, that should go hand in hand.”

Pochettino addressed Keane’s comments about a Spurs side he’s managed since 2014.

“He explained the reality,” Pochettino said.

“The adjectives that he put into this comment, I am going to say nothing, because it is his opinion.

“I loved watching Roy play because he was passionate and a fantastic player.

“I have nothing to say about his opinion. I respect his opinion. I love how he played with passion and energy.”

  1. And now that he’s just a used up old footballer; I will still put a pound in his cup if i run into him but I certainly hope I have it together enough to not pay any attention to and certainly not write about Roy Keane’s opinion. Give us a break Alex – there is real news out there is you look for it.
