16 March 1999 was a glorious time. Britney Spears was number one with ‘Baby one more time’, Cruel Intentions was top of the box office and David Ginola was scoring wonder goals for Tottenham Hotspur whilst wearing a Marks & Spencer vest.
David Ginola was on fire in 1998-99, scoring an abundance of wonder goals for Spurs. He was voted PFA Players’ Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year.
One of the best came away to Barnsley in the quarter finals of the FA Cup. Ginola picked up the ball from Mauricio Tarrico and weaved in and out of the Barnsley defenders before calming passing it in.
The celebration was great as Ginola whipped off his top to reveal a layer of clothing underneath. Under Armour, Nike Pro. Nope. He was wearing a baggy Marks & Spencer white vest that school kids across the country would recognise.
Ginola had a love affair with Spurs fans. Upon leaving the club the following season, in 2000 he felt that was the end for him;
When I left Spurs at 31, I knew it was probably the end, inside me, as a passion. I gave so much passion to the club that I didn’t see myself giving as much to any other club.
