Chelsea, Blackburn Rovers and England left back Graeme Le Saux was on the Quickly Kevin podcast this week and told a great story about the day he won the league for Blackburn Rovers against Liverpool.
On the last day of the 1994-95 Blackburn Rovers were at away to Liverpool and the title was in their hands. Well as long as they didn’t lose and Manchester United didn’t win.
In the title run-in Blackburn had thrown away a 9 point lead as Fergie’s mind games had worked their magic and in Le Saux’s words Blackburn had ‘absolutely bottled it’.
Despite going a goal up through Alan Shearer, Blackburn let in 2 from John Barnes and a last minute free kick from Jamie Redknapp.
It was the most awful experience. To win the league that way is absolutely terrifying.
The Blackburn players thought they had lost the league but thanks to a West Ham win over Manchester United, they were crowned Champions.
We went back to the halfway line our heads down thinking there’s no way this is going to end well but as we starting walking the crowd started to cheer. We thought they’d gone mad.
