We caught up with illustrator Gus Scott who is kick starting a project to design a set of playing cards inspired by footballers like Manchester City’s Kyle Walker, Gareth Bale and Neymar – all in vintage kits.
What was your inspiration for the project?
Me and my mates are always arguing about the best players in the league and wishing kits were still like they were in the 90s, and I thought it would be fun to make something that tapped into this. Initially it was just a self initiated project, I was just going to print a pack for myself and a mate, but a few other people liked it so I thought I’d try and expand it a bit!
Who were the hardest players to design?
The hardest players to draw were Vertonghen, Dzeko & Muller. Because I kept the illustrations quite graphic, they were harder than someone like Neymar who has tattoos, or Luiz who has quite distinctive hair.
What is your favourite design?
I like the design of the Italian cards best, I loved it when 90s kits had the “shiny” detailing on them, and the blue diamonds reminds me of that!
Is this your first Kick Starter?
I’ve never done a Kickstarter before this one, but I’ve actually got another one launching soon. I’ve illustrated a children’s book for an author whose written a story about the journey of a refugee child and her family that has to flee their homeland.
You can back the Kickstarter here from only £10 to get a pack of cards.
