1999-00 was a season that didn’t quite meet expectations for Chelsea. Especially after their opening Premier League game of the season.
Expectations were high after a 3rd place finish in 1998-99 and in the summer Chelsea added France World Cup winner, Didier Deschamps and striker Chris Sutton.
The first game of the season was at home to Sunderland. Ronan Keating was top of the charts with ‘When You Say Nothing At All’ and it was boiling.
That suited Uruguayan Gus Poyet down to the ground of scored the goal of the day. Zola played the ball over and Poyet did a karate style into the top corner.
He scored the goal on pure instinct.
It’s something which I’ve never done before, I’ve never done after,”
It happened for some reason – no explanation.
Poyet was wearing the 1999 Chelsea shirt by Umbro. Clean with a round neck collar and AUTOGLASS on the front.
