We love John Barnes. Skill, pace and a massive step over. It was all of that was on show for Liverpool in the FA cup quarter finals against Brentford in 1989.
He got the ball in his own half. Took it past the midfield, did a massive steps over to lose the defender, cut in on his left and powered it past the goalkeeper. Class. 3rd division Brentford ended up losing 4-0 to Liverpool.
Barnes had his most prolific year that season scoring 28 goals and dominating defenders up and down the country. He only finished second behind Gary Lineker in the goal scoring charts that year.
Phil Thompson reckons Barnes is in the top 3 players to wear the Liverpool shirt;
For me he was one of the best three players ever to play for Liverpool, with Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard, which is high praise given the great players we’ve had.
And that he played like a Brazilian;
There was something Brazilian in the way he played the game, like a downhill skier, the way he glided in and out of defenders.
