We asked Newcastle United fans which player the 2001 home shirt reminded them of, on Instagram. There were a few shouts for Gary Speed and Jermaine Jenas but the most popular choice by a mile was the mercurial French winger, Laurent Robert.
Laurent Robert was signed for Newcastle United from PSG in 2001 for £9.5m and went on to score 30 goals in 129 games for Newcastle United including some absolute screamers. If you have 5 minutes spare enjoy below.
Laurent Robert was signed by Bobby Robson along with Craig Bellamy and Jermaine Jenas. He was everything you would want in a left winger. Class left foot. Long range goals, free kicks and volleys.
The French midfielder scored some spectacular goals for Newcastle. The best? Probably the free kick he scored against Liverpool (3:25) where he absolutely smashed it in from miles out.
He also seemed to have a knack of scoring against Arsenal.
