Some shirts remind you of players. Others remind of matches. This 1997 Newcastle United home shirt does both.
The shirt has a classic design with grandad collar, black and white stripes and Newcastle Brown Ale on the front. An absolute banger.
The shirt was made famous by everyones favourite Columbian, Tino Asprilla and was worn on one of Newcastle United’s best ever European nights when they faced Barcelona at St James Park.
There were some legends on show that day. Asprilla was supported by John Barnes, Phillip Albert, Darren Peacock and captain fantastic Rob Lee. Barcelona had a call sheet of vintage players. Nadal. Figo. De la Pena. Anderson. Rivaldo.
But one man stole that show scoring a hat trick to take Newcastle United into a 3-0 lead. Luis Enrique and Figo stole 2 goals back but it wasn’t enough.
Newcastle United winger Keith Gillespie felt something special was in the air that night
The atmosphere that night was something – you just thought something special might happen. I’ve seen the footage again and every time I watch it – even 20 years later, I still pinch myself.
