When Newcastle almost signed a 1990s Barcelona and Real Madrid superstar

Newcastle almost made their iconic mid-1990s side absolutely unstoppable with a failed bid to sign a Real Madrid and Barcelona superstar at his peak.

Romania legend Gheorge Hagi was agonisingly close to joining Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle side in the ’90s, but decided against a move to the Premier League.

Hagi, who left Real Madrid in 1992 for Brescia, joined Barcelona in 1994, remaining for two seasons at the Nou Camp.

The legendary playmaker recently revealed that he almost made the move to the North East, saying: “I had the chance to join Newcastle when Kevin Keegan was manager and the deal nearly happened. But it was not to be.”

Hagi, an outrageously creative midfielder with an eye for goal, played 125 times for his beloved Romania, scoring 35 goals in an impressive international career.

He’d have likely joined a side that included David Ginola, Peter Beardsley and, later, Alan Shearer. But, as he so eloquently put it, “it wasn’t meant to be”.
