Raul Meireles, Boudewijn Zenden, Joe Cole, Glen Johnson and Nicolas Anelka are just a few of the names who played for both the Merseyside and West London giants.
But one player was reportedly close to moving from Liverpool to Chelsea: Steven Gerrard.
During the summer of 2005, it appeared as though Gerrard was destined to leave his boyhood club for Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea side.
Gerrard would have joined the likes of Frank Lampard, Claude Makelele, Arjen Robben and Didier Drogba in a powerful and immensely talented side.
Liverpool fans were riding the crest of a wave at the time, having beaten AC Milan to the Champions League title just weeks before the news broke that their legendary captain was linked to what would have been one of the most sensational transfers in Premier League history.
And, according to Sky Sports, Gerrard admitted he was close to leaving Anfield, saying:
“The last six weeks have been the toughest of my life and the decision I have come to has been the hardest decision I have ever had to make.
“I fully intended to sign a new contract after the Champions League Final but the events of the past five or six weeks have changed all that.”
But weeks later, amidst a media storm and pressure from some supporters, Gerrard decided to stay at Anfield, where he remained until he joined LA Galaxy in 2015.
