In 1993 Julian Dicks left West Ham to sign for Liverpool. With a change of management the England left back would only last one season before returning to West Ham to don the famous Pony Dagenham Motors shirt.
Julian Dicks was transferred from West Ham to Liverpool in 1993 under the management of player manager Graeme Souness. Dicks’ signing had been part of an effort by Souness to “toughen up” the Liverpool team. The other bruiser he signed. Neil “Razor” Ruddock.
Souness loved Dicks and said of the England left back;
If I was to pick the best 11 players I’ve ever worked with, he’d be one of them.
Dicks had to give up one iconic shirt for another. Leaving behind the Pony West Ham shirt for the adidas 3 stripes on the shoulder Liverpool kit. Sadly for Dicks, Souness (like the Liverpool shirt) was replaced by Roy Evans who was not a fan. They clashed over training methods and also because Evans thought Dicks was a fat slob. The new Liverpool manager banished him to play with the reserve and to train with 15- and 16-year-olds.
So that was it. Back to West Ham and a chance to wear the famous Pony Dagenham Motors shirt. On re-signing Dicks, Harry Redknapp said he thought the chairman was “off his rocker” as Dicks was massive but that did not put off the left back.
Dicks scored 5 goals in his first season back at Upton Park that secured their survival in the Premier League.
