This stat will make Manchester City fans feel some serious injustice

Manchester City fans utterly adore Sergio Aguero.

And for good reason. He’s one of the best strikers in the world, and certainly among the best in the Premier League.

In fact, many would claim that, over the past six seasons, Aguero has been the best striker on these shores.

Aguero created the finest final-day drama in Premier League history

He became the fifth player in the competition’s history to score 20 or more goals in three consecutive seasons (Harry Kane also achieved that last season), and the second-fastest player to reach 100 Premier League goals (obviously Alan Shearer was the quickest…).

From the very first time he played for City, the fans fell in love with him. Here are a few reasons why:

He came off the bench against Swansea, scored twice and set one up. He ravaged Bayern Munich’s back line in the Champions League, scoring a hat-trick past Manuel Neuer. He became the scourge of Manchester United (and most other teams he’s faced more than once), regularly popping up to bury City’s bitter rivals in the derby. Oh, and he even created the greatest piece of final-day drama by scoring the winner against QPR to claim the club’s first title in 44 years.

But despite all he’s achieved, one stat will outrage City fans: he’s never been selected in the PFA Team of the Year.

Just let that sink in. He’s been beaten by the likes of Harry Kane, Romelu Lukaku, Luis Suarez, Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge.

The most peculiar season was in 2014-15, when Aguero topped the goalscoring chart with 26 goals, five more than second-placed Kane.

But Kane (21 goals) and Diego Costa (20) were selected in the TOTY. Aguero also chipped in with nine assists, one fewer than Eden Hazard, six more than Costa and four more than Kane.

I’m not sure what more the guy has to do to get into the TOTY, but expect more of the same next season…

  1. Everybody knows why this is. If he played for Utd Chelsea Spurs Arsenal or Liverpool he’d have been in it several years. At City we don’t care about stupid, meaningless accolades like TOTY. He’s won the league twice with us. Suarez, Sturridge and Kane can’t say the same. In England, we reward failure and admire also rans. That’s why England are serial failures at football.

    1. Quite outrageous that he wasn’t in it back in 2014-15. Directly involved in 35 goals (the closest to him was Kane on 25). Possibly down to the fact that he went on an incredible goalscoring run towards the end of the season, but you’d be nuts to claim Aguero wasn’t the best striker (and very probably player) in the PL that season.

  2. Man City players have always been neglected in the POTY final selections because they are not English & because of the bias & hate towards the club they play for -Manchester City. Joe Hart made it twice because he’s England’s no. 1 & topped d charts. It’s no longer too baffling how David Silva & Sergio Aguero have not been well appreciated. For us City fans, we adore them & we see the passion in their football – that’s enough for us & our stars. The bias can continue, as we don’t care.

    1. David Silva has been in the Team of the Month only once since he signed for Man City. Seems extremely harsh, given his consistent brilliance at one of the best teams in the country.
