Why this West Ham legend is the ultimate Premier League cult icon

West Ham legend Paolo Di Canio was one of the most watchable players the Premier League has ever seen.

The Italian firebrand had it all: flair, technique, wily strength and an eye for an absolute beauty.

He also had a wicked streak that often landed him into trouble, most notably at Sheffield Wednesday, when, after being sent off against Arsenal, he shoved referee Paul Alcock to the turf.

His magnetic personality and playing style made him one of the must-watch players of his time. He even one a fair play award for catching the ball, rather than sticking it in the back of the net, to stop play for an injured Everton player.

And let’s not forget some of his goals, like this utter worldie against Wimbledon:

Or this beaut against Chelsea:

When he came back as a manager to rescue Sunderland from the drop, he was infinitely more watchable on the touchline than his players. Just look at him go as he watched his side batter Newcastle away:

He may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the guy is great to watch.
