The story behind Real Madrid and Barcelona legend Ronaldo’s outrageous haircut

Ronaldo will be remembered for his sensational performances at club level with the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona, but his most iconic moment came in 2002, when he opted for one of the most striking haircuts in football history at the World Cup in South Korea and Japan.

After being written off with injury ahead of the tournament, the great Ronaldo emerged as the stand-out player in Brazil’s triumphant side, holding the trophy aloft with a triangle-patch of hair on the front of his head.

It was a haircut few had seen before or after the tournament, but Ronaldo has revealed a crafty but brilliant reason for sporting what looked like a moustache on his head.

Talking to ESPN Brazil, he said: “My groin was hurting. I was only at 60%. So I shaved my head.

“Everybody was only talking about my injury. When I arrived in training with this haircut everybody stopped talking about the injury.”

And boy did it work. Ronaldo finished the tournament as the top scorer with eight goals. His closest rivals for the Golden Boot, Miroslav Klose and international team-mate Rivaldo chipped in with five apiece.

His haircut may have been pretty woeful, but his performances were anything but. What. A. Player.
