When Lehmann returned for Arsenal against Blackpool and asked the ref to “protect pensioners”

In 2009 Jens Lehmann returned to train with Arsenal and was the surprise inclusion against Blackpool away.

The German goal returned to train with Arsenal but a knee injury sustained by Manuel Almunia in the warm-up gave Lehmann his first Arsenal appearance since May 2008.

He didn’t take any time to settle and the 41 year played like he hadn’t been away.  Big saves, confrontation and even a word to the ref in the tunnel.

Lehmann asked reminded the ref;

You’ve got to protect pensioners.

The game itself had was relatively straight forward for Arsenal.  Lehmann was shielded by a defence made up of Koscielny, Squillaci, Eboue and Clichy but it held firm and only conceded the 1 goal.

Arsenal’s  attacking combination of Nasri, Cesc and Robin Van Persie was all too much for Blackpool and they ended up winning 3-1 with Lehmann getting a beautiful send off from the traveling Arsenal fans.
