At his peak, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard could have walked into any team – including the mighty Real Madrid.
In fact, during Jose Mourinho’s time at Los Blancos, Europe’s most successful club tried to incite Gerrard to agitate for a move to the Santiago Bernabeu, according to the former Liverpool captain himself.
Throughout his illustrious career, boyhood Liverpool fan Gerrard resisted several advances from both Chelsea and Real, but he’s lifted the lid on the aggressive tactics deployed by Madrid to convince him to leave Anfield while playing under Brendan Rodgers.

‘They wanted me to kick up a war to get out of Liverpool for a certain amount of money, which I wasn’t prepared to do,’ Gerrard was quoted as saying in the Daily Mail. ‘I think Real Madrid, when they’re after a player they have the attitude of “we’re Real Madrid, you should fight to come to us.”
‘But my love for Liverpool, I’m not prepared to go to war and plus I was very happy and stable at the time.’
That’ll make Liverpool fans love him even more. If that’s possible.
