In 2009 Arsenal legend Robert Pires returned to Arsenal playing for Villarreal in the Champions League and the Arsenal fans basically sang him name for 90 minutes.
The French midfielder made 192 Premier League appearances for Arsenal scoring 62 goals and winning shed load of trophies.
He left Arsenal in 2006 to join Villarreal, frustrated that he was no longer a first teamer and was withdrawn in the Champions League final against Barcelona.
Pires signed for Villarreal on a free and was part of the “yellow submarines” revolution under (future Manchester City manager) Manuel Pellegrini. In 2009 they qualified of the Champions League and were drawn against Arsenal.
On the pitch Arsenal smashed Villareal 3-0 with Cesc pulling the strings and goals from Theo and Adebayor. It was an emotional night for Pires and the Arsenal fans who literally sung his name from kick off to full time.
I know English fans have good memories. But it was beyond everything. They gave an me ovation before, during and after the match.
All match long, while Arsenal played at home, I heard the stadium chanting my name. I almost had tears in my eyes. I will never forget.
