Southampton and Under Armour have launched their new home shirt for the 2017 18 season and it is a glowing tribute to Kevin Keegan and the 1980s.
The 2017 Southampton shirt has a white centre with red sides, v neck collar and trim as Under Armour pay tribute to Southampton’s history.
There was also a shift in who modeled the kit. Originally Virgil Van Dijk (above) but he was switched out for the big oak tree of a goalie Frasier Forster.
The shirt that inspired it was the 1980 shirt worn by Kevin Keegan as he signed from Hamburg. Keegan smashed it on the south coast with 37 goals in 68 games. The former England manager was European footballer of the year with Hamburg and Southampton signed him after Liverpool didn’t exercise their buy back clause.
I was with Lawrie [McMenemy] at a charity event the other day, and he said he phoned up Peter Robinson because he wanted me, but Liverpool had a clause. Peter said, ‘No, we won’t be signing him, definitely, we don’t need him.
