As Roy Keane arrived at Celtic from Manchester United, he entered a dressing room of professionals who were desperate not to anger the irascible midfielder.
If you’re one of the few people into football who doesn’t shiver at the name ‘Roy Keane,’ then here’s a horror tackle of his to paint a picture of the United legend’s sometimes-ugly approach to the beautiful game:
And former Celtic man Mark Wilson managed to find himself on the receiving end of a Keano special during one of the ex-Ireland captain’s first training sessions – despite desperately trying to appease Keane.
Darren O’Dea, who played with the pair at the time, recites a brilliant tale about how Keane hit Wilson ‘like a train’ as payback for an earlier challenge.
‘I think it was one of the first training sessions and as Keano got the ball,’ O’Dea says. ‘Mark Wilson sprinted in to press him but when he went to put the brakes on, he slipped and absolutely cleaned him out.
‘He obviously panicked, saying “I’m so sorry!” and Keano’s like “It’s not a problem, mate. Don’t worry about it.”
‘Five minutes later, Willo got the ball, passed it and ten minutes after, Keano hit him like an absolute train and put him up in the air.’
So if you ever find yourself in a lighthearted kickabout with Roy Keane or you’re part of the Republic of Ireland set-up, never go in on Keano. It’s simply not worth it.
