J-League’s Grampus Eight have launched their new Mizuno shirt for 2017 18. It is a tribute to the year they were formed 25 years ago, when Tottenham Hotspur’s Gary Lineker played for them.
The shirt has a retro collar, logo and the vintage Nagoya Grampus Eight. It was worn by Gary Lineker when he signed for the Japanese club from Tottenham Hotspur.
Lineker’s move from Tottenham Hotspur to Grampus Eight was scolded upon the English press;
Lineker … appears happy earning a huge paycheck and content with his decision to retire from competition in Europe to play in third-rate stadiums in a league that is, as he puts it, ‘in its infancy’.
But Toyota (the teams sponsors) were very happy with the signing;
His image as ‘the gentle sportsman’ is a good mix of software and hardware. We want to use him generally for Toyota’s corporate image.
Lineker had a tough time in Japan with injury and only managed to score 8 goals in 24 games over 2 seasons but at least he had the chance to wear one of the most iconic football shirts in the world football.
