The Community Shield isn’t always a corker, but back in 1996, Manchester United taught upstarts Newcastle a lesson after the Magpies ran them close for the title. In the latter stages of the 1995-96 season, Kevin Keegan blew up (we all remember the glorious ‘I would love it’ rant) and soon after, so did his team, allowing Alex Ferguson’s United to win the title.
The 1996 Community Shield was a highly anticipated affair, two titans of the English game going head to head once more.
But it wasn’t the edge-of-your-seat game everyone expected. It was a proper trousers-down hammering, with United cantering to a 4-0 win. A slick finish from Eric Cantona and a diving header from Nicky Butt put United in the box seat, but it was David Beckham who stole the show.
The future England captain scored perhaps the best Community Shield goal ever, by chipping over Newcastle goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek from range.
