This ex-Liverpool man is the only Englishman to play in a CL final but not for his country

Liverpool have a pretty illustrious history in Europe’s elite competition.

We all know that the Merseyside club have won it five times – more than any other English club – but here’s a bit of trivia that’s sure to impress your mates.

Can you name the only ever Englishman to appear in the Champions League final who has never made a senior England appearance?

We were posed the question the other day, without the clue that it was a former Liverpool player.

Initially we thought it was David May, but he famously never played in the Champions League final in 1999 with Manchester United.

Then we thought of Ryan Bertrand, but he’s played 12 times for England’s first-team.

The real winner of this conundrum is Jermaine Pennant. Remember him?

Pennant played the full 90 minutes in Liverpool’s 2007 defeat by AC Milan.

Filippo Inzaghi scored twice for the Italians before Dirk Kuyt’s late consolation goal.

Pennant, who has spent time at Arsenal, Stoke and now Bury in his career, played a number of times for England’s youth sides, but never made an appearance as a full international.

There’s a nice little bit of pub ammo for you tonight.
