The greatest five Tottenham players of all time

Tottenham may have a fantastic squad now, but they’ve had some brilliant players over the years at White Hart Lane.

But who is the greatest player in their history?

If you think our top five Spurs players is utterly nuts, or even if you think it’s bang on, head to our Facebook page now to let us know.

5. Glenn Hoddle

He may be an irritating football pundit, but Hoddle was a brilliant footballer. His winding runs from midfield and penchant for the spectacular made him a favourite at White Hart Lane. In a golden era for Tottenham, Hoddle helped the club to two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup.

4. Jimmy Greaves

An absolute goal machine, Greaves scored for fun throughout his career. Although he shot to prominence at Chelsea, Greaves is best known for his time at Spurs. The club’s all-time top scorer with 266 goals in 379 games.

There hasn’t been an English striker since with such a steely composure in front of goal.

3. Pat Jennings

The only goalkeeper on the list. He’s also one of the few players who’s liked by both Arsenal and Tottenham. Jennings spent 13 years at Tottenham before leaving for Highbury in 1985.

He made 591 appearances for Tottenham, and an incredible 119 for Northern Ireland. Jennings won the FA Cup, the UEFA Cup and the League Cup twice with Spurs.

2. Paul Gascoigne

One of football’s cliches is that Gascoigne was the most gifted footballer of his generation, and it’s absolutely true.

Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to sign him when he humiliated Norman Whiteside, Bryan Robson and Remi Moses while at Newcastle, but Gazza went to Tottenham instead. In his four seasons there he became one of the best players on the planet, winning the FA Cup in 1991.

His personality and ability make him a must on this list, but his life since retiring has been a tragic soap opera we all want him to get the best of.

1. Gareth Bale

Bale isn’t only the best Spurs player ever, but he’s well on his way to becoming one of the best British players ever. The Wales winger struggled a little when he joined the club, but when played on the left wing he came into his own.

The games against Inter Milan under Harry Redknapp were incredible displays of power, skill and athleticism, but his final season, under the leadership of Andre Villas-Boas, he shone so bright that Real Madrid came calling.

Somehow, he’s improved since leaving Tottenham.

  1. Spurs has had a string of outstanding players over the years : WHITE, BLANCHFLOWER, GILZEAN, CLIVE ALLEN, SHERINGHAM, MCKAY, CHIVERS, KEANE, JONES, DEFOE, etc..

  2. Glenn Hoddle was a far more gifted player than Gareth Bale and should be top of the list.

Ginola was also more gifted than Bale.

Having a top five is a bit silly, because there were far more great players. How can you have a list without Dave Mackay, Danny Blanchflower, Bobby Smith, Cliff Jones, Jurgen Klinsman, Toby Alderweireld?

  3. You missed Dave Mckay, one of the best all round footballers, who also was one of the most influential ever to kick a ball for Spurs, this guy had everything

  4. The greatest five Tottenham Footballers of all time. Apart from Jimmy Greaves, Danny Blanchflower, John White, Tommy Harmer and Dave McKay stand out way above the other players mentioned.
