Georgi Kinkladze. What a hero. He came to Manchester City back when the Premier League was fun and scored some amazing goals. HIs best was when he rounded half of the Southampton team before dinking the ball over an oncoming Dave Beasant.
Things could have been different for the Georgian. Before joining City he trained with Real Madrid’s reserves, where he caught the eye of Boca Juniors scouts, who took him to Argentina for a month’s loan. Kinkladze only played 3 games but he did get to meet his childhood hero Diego Maradona. Result.
Kinkladze was a shining light in some dark time for City. HIs goal against Southampton was named goal of the month – and runner up in goal of the season to Tony Yeboah’s goal for Leeds (fair enough).
Team mate Keith Curle wasn’t surprised by that goal
The goal against Southampton didn’t surprise me because I’d seen Georgi do that type of thing in training all the time. In fact, he did it so regularly that after a while our defenders stopped committing to a challenge when he had the ball because they knew he could and would make a fool out of them.
