Dan Leydon: My first Manchester United football shirt

WE CAUGHT UP WITH ILLUSTRATOR DAN LEYDON TO TALK ABOUT; GETTING A MANCHESTER UNITED GOALIE SHIRT FROM HIS GRANNY (EVEN THOUGH HE’S A LIVERPOOL FAN), HIS FAVOURITE ARSENAL SHIRT AND LUIS SUAREZ DESTROYING NORWICH.

What was your first football shirt?

Peter Schmeichel in vintage Manchester United goalie shirt

My first shirt was unfortunately a Manchester United goalie shirt. I had just gotten into football and my granny wanted to get me a jersey as a present.

She arrived back from town with a United goalie top, the perfect present for a Liverpool supporting right winger. I still wore it for a few months anyways so as not to hurt her feelings.

Pretty soon after I got the famous white and turquoise quartered Liverpool top with Fowler on the back, so I count that as my first jersey for the team I supported.

What is your favourite football shirt?

Maradona Boca Juniors football shirt

Off the top of my head I love the Boca Juniors kit, the colours are great and it works fantastically in tandem with logo placement.

The classic Ajax home shirt with ABN AMRO down the front is a great one also, the sponsor was assimilated into the overall layout and the result was a lovely piece of design.

The current Arsenal away kit is absolutely gorgeous, the colours are actually vaguely similar to Boca now I think about it. Atletico Madrid home shirts are always great. The bold blue they use goes great with the red and white.

Looking at my answers now I think I pick shirts on how much I like drawing them. Overall my favourite is the current Boca home shirt. I could keep naming jerseys if I’m being honest. Juve home is always class too. Oh and Barca etc etc etc. There’s too many nice jerseys!

What is your favourite goal?

This changes every two hours but I’ll give it a go. I swing between Ronaldinho’s toe poke against, Ronaldinho’s first Barca goal, Zlatan’s mazy run for Ajax, Zlatan’s volley against Anderlecht, Totti’s chip against Inter, the list goes on.

However one that encapsulates a lot of what I love about football is one of the Luis Suarez goals away against Norwich. He had just been through on goal and missed a relatively easy chance, the fans are giving him dogs abuse and a whole assortment of charming hand gestures. What happens next was just absolutely brilliant to watch, I’ll let the footage do the talking …
