Manchester United have a track record of being pretty, pretty good when it comes to mind games.
First their was Sir Alex Ferguson, who caused Rafa Benitez and Kevin Keegan to lose their shit in seasons gone by
But now there’s a new manager to carry the torch. David Moyes and Louis van Gaal weren’t great at psyching out their adversaries, but Jose Mourinho is a master of management’s dark arts.
Here are some of his best quotes.
‘HOW DO YOU SAY “CHEATING” IN CATALAN?’
On Lionel Messi’s involvement in Asier del Horno’s red card during Chelsea’s Champions League defeat by Barcelona back in 2006.
‘HE IS A SPECIALIST IN FAILURE. I’M NOT.’
Arsene Wenger makes his first appearance in this list. The pair have never seen eye to eye, and this was Mourinho’s response to Wenger’s claims that his title rivals in 2013-14 were playing down their title chances because they were scared of failing.
‘ONE DAY I WOULD LIKE JOSEP GUARDIOLA TO WIN THIS COMPETITION PROPERLY’
While at Real Madrid, Mourinho wasn’t too happy with the way Barcelona had played during a Champions League semi-final. We can’t wait for these two to meet again next week.
‘IF I WANTED TO HAVE AN EASY JOB I WOULD HAVE STAYED AT PORTO. BEAUTIFUL BLUE CHAIR, THE UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TROPHY, GOD, AND AFTER GOD, ME.’
Jose’s always had a penchant for a soundbite. This is what he said when he first took over at Chelsea in 2004.
‘MY HISTORY AS A MANAGER CANNOT BE COMPARED WITH RIJKAARD’S. HE HAS ZERO TROPHIES AND I HAVE LOTS.’
What is it with Mourinho and Barcelona? As well as Guardiola, he isn’t a great fan of Holland legend and ex-Barca boss Rijkaard either.
‘I THINK HE IS ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO IS A VOYEUR. HE LIKES TO WATCH OTHER PEOPLE.’
Wenger’s back. This time, cast your mind back to 2005, when Wenger made regular comments to the press about Mourinho’s Chelsea side. Needless to say, Mourinho wasn’t keen on this. He added: ‘There are some guys who, when they are at home, have a big telescope to see what happens in other families. He speaks, speaks, speaks about Chelsea.’
‘IF SHE TAKES CARE OF HER HUSBAND’S DIET SHE WILL HAVE LESS TIME TO SPEAK ABOUT ME’
Wenger’s had his fair share in this list, so it’s time for Rafa Benitez. Even Benitez’s wife, Montse Seara, wasn’t safe from Mourinho’s ire. She had claimed that her husband was ‘tidying up’ Mourinho’s former teams Inter Milan (where Benitez replaced Mourinho) and Real Madrid (where Carlo Ancelotti succeeded Mourinho before Benitez took charge.
Mourinho wasn’t particularly kind about Benitez’s job at Inter, where Mourinho had won the treble the season before.
He said: ‘The only club where her husband replaced me was at Inter Milan, where in six months he destroyed the best team in Europe at the time.’
